Spinning Silver – Naomi Novik

spinning silver and the president is missing

Enchanting! This is a magical story based loosely on the classic Rumplestiltskin, with more complexity, characters and beautiful world-building.

The story is of three strong females. A daughter of a Jewish money lender, a poor peasant girl and a privileged but neglected daughter of a lord – each making their way in life and “keeping the wolves out of the room”.

I had been dying to read this and finally found it at my local book store in Jo’burg. It’s also the first novel I’ve read since Teddy was born and encouraged me to start reading again 👍🏼

Bring me the winter king, and I will make you a summer queen.

Miryem is the daughter of a moneylender, but her father’s too kind-hearted to collect his debts. They face poverty, until Miryem hardens her own heart and takes up his work in their village. Her success creates rumours he can turn silver into gold, which attract the fairy king of winter himself. He sets Miryem an impossible challenge – and if she fails, she dies. Yet if she triumphs, it could mean a fate worse than death. And in her desperate efforts to succeed, Miryem unwittingly involves the unhappy daughter of a lord.

Irina’s father schemes to wed her to the tsar. However, their dashing ruler hides a terrible secret that threatens mortals and winter alike. Torn between deadly choices, Miryem and Irina embark on a quest that will encompass sacrifice, power and love.
