Wow. Educated: A Memoir had me both horrified and mesmerised.
This is a one in a million story and a well written autobiography. Tara Westover is an amazing woman to overcome such extreme adversity to get herself an education.
And an extraordinary education at that. What an incredible life and incredible achievement.
Therefore it’s not surprising that Educated appeared on Bill Gates recommended reading list for 2018. Read Gates’ interview with Tara Westover notably titled “Educated is even better than you’ve heard”.
Likewise, President Obama includes Educated in his reading recommendations.
I found the book quite disturbing in parts, and yet it is ultimately a motivating and moving story. It has definitely left me feeling inspired, wanting to read more and do more about access to education. If you want to learn more about my current Room to Read initiative please click here.
A highly recommended read.
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.
